Where’s My Refund? A Guide to Tracking Your Federal Tax Return

For many clients, filing the return is just the first step—the real anticipation begins while waiting for that refund to hit the bank account. The IRS has been steadily moving away from paper checks to improve security and speed, heavily favoring electronic transfers. This shift minimizes the risk of mail theft and cuts down on the costs associated with printing and postage. Even if you don't have a traditional bank account, the agency has implemented options like prepaid debit cards to ensure you receive your funds electronically.

The Fastest Way to Track Your Funds

Once we’ve filed your federal return, you don’t need to guess where your money is. The most reliable way to check your status is through the IRS interactive tool, Where’s My Refund?.

Whether you opted for a direct deposit into a single account or split the refund across several, this tool provides near real-time access to your status. It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is generally updated once overnight. This means there is no need to refresh the page multiple times throughout the day—checking once in the morning is sufficient.

When Can You Check?

If we e-filed your return (which is the standard for our firm), you can usually start tracking your refund status 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt. If you filed a paper return, the wait is significantly longer—refund information typically won't appear until four weeks after mailing.

Statistically, nine out of 10 taxpayers who e-file and choose direct deposit receive their refunds in fewer than 21 days. However, every tax situation is unique, and certain returns may require additional review.

What You Need to Log In

To protect your privacy, the system requires specific data points from your return to verify your identity. Before you log in, have your copy of the federal tax return handy. You will need to enter:

  • Your Social Security Number (or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number)

  • The Tax Year (Options currently include 2025, 2024, and 2023)

  • Your Filing Status (Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, Head of Household, or Qualifying Surviving Spouse)

  • The Exact Refund Amount (You must enter the whole dollar amount shown on your return—do not round up or down)

Understanding Your Status

Once verified, the tool will display one of three stages:

  1. Return Received: The IRS has your return and is processing it.

  2. Refund Approved: Processing is complete, and the IRS is preparing to issue your funds by a specific date.

  3. Refund Sent: The funds are on their way to your bank or the check is in the mail. Note that it may take up to 5 days for your bank to post the funds to your account.

Troubleshooting and Mobile Options

The Where’s My Refund? tool also provides customized links if there is a delay or issue with your return. For instance, if 28 days have passed since the mailing date listed in the tool and you still haven't received your refund, you can initiate a refund trace online.

For those who prefer tracking on mobile, the IRS2Go app is a free option available for both Apple and Android devices. You can find download information at IRS2Go.

Additionally, the online tool is accessible for visually impaired taxpayers, compatible with the Job Access with Speech screen reader and Braille displays.

If the online tool directs you to call the IRS, or if you receive a notice in the mail regarding your refund, please reach out to our office immediately so we can help resolve the issue.
